My Tunes

Ok…my tastes are extremely varied. My background is Latin music, Soul, Funk, R&B, opera, Country/Western, and Classic Rock. These are basically the genres that influenced me in my youth. When my sister started collecting LPs I was introduced to sounds like: The Police, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie,  ZZ Top, The Doors, English Beat, and many more.

As I got older, and started to develop my own musical interests, I started getting into progressive (post modern) styles. I was big into Billy Idol, but was starting to experiment with The Smiths, Depeche Mode, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Love & Rockets,  The Cure, Public Image Limited, Psychedelic Furs, and others. This was an amazing phase in my musical taste development. I started discovering cuts everywhere. It didn’t really matter what genre,as long as I thought it sounded interesting and complex.

I moved into the high school days(daze) listening to these artists, but started to discover bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Suicidal Tendencies, NWA, 2 Live Crew,  plus a plethora of hair bands, which, I’m sure most of you are familiar. Let’s just say that the power ballad was king at this point in time.

So what am I listening to now? Glad you asked. I am still very much of an eclectic musically speaking.  I have found some music that make up the core of my listening, when my 600+ artists aren’t shuffling through iTunes. Keep in mind that I have no base genre. It all depends on what I feel like, and what I discover. Here is my current artists list that I am focused on:

    • Radiohead – The full catalog. I finally saw them on the In Rainbows  tour, and I think that King of Limbs, their latest release, is an amazing album. Of special interest to me here is Codex and Lotus Flower.
    • The White Buffalo – This is a musician that I came across through one of the tv shows I follow. I’ve seen him twice in Seattle, and feel he is a shooting star. check out Damned and Sweet Hereafter. This guy is simply amazing. He has an energy, and he sounds to me, like a slice of the USA.
    • Swollen Members – A friend of mine turned me on to this group many years back, and I have been hooked ever since. A little underground hip hop group from Vancouver B.C. fronted by Mad Child, a rapper that is part of the original Rock Steady Crew. If you like hip hop and haven’t listened to these guys, do yourself a favor. Try Night Vision of their latest album Dagger Mouth. For a taste of their roots, have a listen to  Breath featuring Nelly Furtado; or try Bollywood Chick from Armed to the Teeth.
    • Soulsavers – Hauntingly beautiful, and solemnly gorgeous. These guys have been around for a while. They are definitely worth a listen. Revival is potent and strangely familiar. Kingdoms of Rain got me hooked. Has a very “Johnny Cash-American” sound to it.
    • Gotye – I’ve just recently encountered this little ditty on a late night motorcycle ride home. One of the rare occasions I was actually listening to the radio. Check out Somebody I Used to Know.
    • Florence + The Machine – This group surprised me with a very interesting sound.I love it, and feel that anything that is novel and unique has staying power. What do you think? Listen to Shake It Up.

Well there is just the tip of the iceberg. Of the over 5200 songs in my collection, these are stand outs that are getting regular play. Don’t think for a minute though that I am not constantly in pursuit of music from my past, present, and future. I am regularly discovering and rediscovering great music! I’ll be reviewing music her on my blog from time to time. Tell me what you think of my tunes, and let me know if I have influenced you with anything new.

Lots of love people.
